London Summer Olympic 2012 - Epic Martial News! Day 6

Now isn't that awesome looking or what?
The London Summer Olympic 2012, Countries have won glory & golds whilst some receive close-call wins and some regrettable defeats. And we are only hitting Day 6! Good luck to those who have not competed yet and well done to those who already did their country proud....or not..?

I'm sure many of us can simply look around for scores of their specific matches and teams on the official London Olympic Website, but what Wing Chun Bear is more interested to find are more impactful news!

Remember the controversial defeat of Yang-Shu-Chun from Taiwan during the Beijing Olympic 2008?

So without further ado lets look at the current big news in current Olympic news to Martial Arts.

Japan Victory? or lost? or win? I DUNNO! Tell us refereee!
Boxing, Japan Satoshi Shimizu lands a body blow to his opponent from Azeri named Abdulhamidov. Looks like a sure win to move to quaterfinals for Japan since Abdulhamidov fell to the ground whilst wobbling standing back up. However Referee gave Abdulhamidov a contradictory score of 22-17 whom which Satoshi lost. Clearly spectators booed the decision and later the referee decided to appeal for his previous decision and made Satoshi to move to the next round.....well atleast the referee is doing whats right....RIGHT?? more info courtesy of DailyMail.

Sit down Protest! soo its sitting down protest....don't the managers need to move on to the next match?
Supposedly sitting-down protest is not a new thing, you just sit down to protest something about the match until someone or something is being done. But of course theres always controversies! The news supposedly that Korean (sitting down) Shin Lam is winning and when suddenly the match was given some time extension and that gave her opponent German, Britta Heideman to get the upperhand and won. So it was an utter defeat for Shin who then made London Olympic's first sitting down protest! let the Protest begins!....supposedly she had the chance for Bronze match and lost that one as well.......well.........a lost is a lost right?...more info courtesy of the Telegraph

The path to win the Gold medal in the Olympic is very expensive.....lets start a brothel!
New Zealander, Logan Campbell who competed in the 2008 Beijing Sumer Olympic in Taekwondo didn't make it too far. Upon returning home he amounted a large sums of debt for his travels for the Olympics....(correct me if im wrong but dont they get sponsorship from the governement for these sorts of trips?) So for him to compete in this year's London Olympic he needs more money fast.....so he decided to open a brothel. To fund for his training.....(apparently). "Training" alright. tee hee...
Jokes aside, those who don't know, it is legal to sell sex under the right guidelines in New Zealand. He sold his business thereafter but with the press and the media won't let go of such story kept on bugging him about his past, calling him the a sleazy pimp. Some Olympics officials find it degrading to the Olympic community for having such a past. Logan continues to defend against the barrage of negative press. More info coretesy of Yahoo! sports.

Olympic will continue to be strong due to stronger competitors every 4 years setting new records but it is also the controversies the dramas and the weird that makes Olympic great! Keep them coming i say!

Taekwondo - New rules set for Olympic 2012

Taekwondo made it's first appearance at the Summer Olympic Games as a demonstration sport at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul when Korea was the host country. It later became a full medal sport at the 2000 summer Olympics in Sydney Australia and has been a sport in the Olympics since then. China demonstrated their vast number of Taichi practitioners during the opening ceremony, I wonder if we will expect to see some sort of Taichi competition in the Olympic one day?

According to some sources, Taekwondo is on the verge of being eliminated from the official Olympic Games, due to lack of popularity. (I personally disagree coz TKD community is larger than ever) but it raised concern to the WTF (World Taekwondo Federation)

What a low blow that was
Concerned sources & rumors states the reason being the lack of fairness in judging during the match. Often judges are criticized as vague and confusing. Olympics Taekwondo match are judged by one referee and 4 judges.....sitting pretty far from the action, BUT with the help of 2 cameras. Points & penalties are given when 2 judges recognize them. However due to flashy and fast movement & angles can cause ambiguous judgement.

So the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF)  addresses the issue with a total of five cameras around the court!

The community have growing concerns that TDK has lost its dynamic appeal and the games are not fun to watch....(really?) I personally find it to be the flashiest game to watch on TV, next to lightweight boxing and Judo. So for London games of 2012, the size of the court will be reduced to 8x8 meters.
The rules also been changed where a super flashy kicks & advanced attack moves will be awarded up to 4 points, making the sport more exciting to watch. That sounds like an excellent idea to me! this will change the fighters game and strategy completely. We might even see unexpected new stars coz now it allows for new moves we often don't see in the games.

Better yet, we might even get to see some rare knockouts in the London Olympic games this year!

Now here's a thought. Do you think London will feature Baritsu/Bartitsu in their opening ceremony? How cool would can it be to see a sport where the sports attire is to wear victorian attire with a top hat and fake mustaches? I sure wish to see that!

Bas Rutten - One of the funniest man in Mix Martial Arts (MMA)

Those who follows the phenomenon sports that is Mix Martial Arts (MMA) would have heard the name Bas Rutten. This man does it all, a Kyokushin Karate & Taekwondo blackbelt, Muay Thai Kickboxer, Jiujitsu and Mix Martial Artist. As a young boy he idolizes the legendary Bruce Lee after watching 'Enter the Dragon', he decided to start training for boxing even against his parents conservative wishes.

At the age of 20 he began competing in Muay Thai fighting 16 matches, winning 14 by 'Knockouts' - 13 of the winning in his first round; and his other two lost by TKO (technical Knockout). With outstanding record at a young age, his career began to skyrocket with continuous amazing winnings and to becoming the UFC champion.

His devastating punch to the gut makes his fellow fighter Proper Fear to fight him from getting hit by his punch

For being an extraordinary fighter wasn't what caught my attention to Bas Rutten. What REALLY caught my attention was his wild charismatic nature yet awkwardly and yet genuinely funny videos to coaching people in self defense.

Here's a summary clip of some of his self defense video

From what i believed after his retirement he uses his popularity and began to focus on his charismatic persona much like the wrestler "The Rock" to the immensely influential power of the media to shine brighter. Making an even bigger name through the forceful power of the Media, appearing on TV shows, Movies, talk-shows and even appearing in video games such as Grand Theft Auto....etc etc etc.

Bas Rutten is very outspoken and very hilarious instructional videos (floating in youtube).

Thanks to Bas, I was introduced the lighter side of MMA and began taking notice of the world of Mix Martial Arts. I was once a Traditional Martial Artist purist. I was once skeptical of the constant violent of brawling nature to think MMA is not proper martial arts.

Much like his hero Bruce Lee Bas Rutten is quickly to become an official name to be immortalize in the Mix Martial Arts Hall of Fame. My respects to you Bas and true to the nature of your humor I will not bow for you, instead ima' gonna break your leg instead.

Remember to use the ambiance when fighting - coz it hurts more
